North Wales Crusaders’ Matt Reid has experienced just about every emotion possible during his two stints at the club, however, his work away from it also deserves attention in its own right.

When not training in the evenings or pulling on a North Wales kit at a weekend, Reid can be found at schools around the North West of England delivering PE sessions, coaching teachers or delivering extra sports sessions to children with special educational needs.

“I think my work goes hand in hand with rugby, he said.

“I run my own business and work with a team of people who are in and out of schools across the North West, delivering PE lessons to give the teachers valuable planning time during the days, taking groups of children with special educational needs for extra sessions or even going in and helping to up-skill the teachers for the lessons which they deliver.

“I’d say that it’s a very rewarding job, and it’s one where I have to keep fit, make sure that I’m a role model to the students which I come into contact with and really just ensure that I give something back during each lesson which I deliver.

“My job works well with playing rugby, I have more time that a traditional teacher would which enables me to get extra training in, get to training early and prepare for games as best I can.”

The 32-year-old, who joined Crusaders in 2013 for his first spell with the club before going on to play for Coventry Bears and Oldham RLFC, re-joined North Wales back in 2019, calling it home ever since.

Speaking about his time at the club to date, Reid said: “I think I’ve probably been through just about every emotion which you could at a sports club.

“From success to low points, it’s always been back well by the supporters here, and I think that’s a huge things for all the lads.

“I have to say that both on and off the field, from my time of being here it feels like the club is in the best position it’s been in.

“The squad which we have here this year is probably of Championship standard, the competition for places is really high, and I think you sense that even just in training.

“League One is really tough this year, there’s no easy games and I think that you feel that within the squad.

“We’re capable of winning every game, but to do so you have to be consistent and at your best, otherwise you’ll come unstuck as we did against Swinton a few weeks ago.”

With an away trip to face Keighley Cougars this weekend, you can catch Matt and the team back at Stadiwm CSM on Sunday 1st June when we welcome Rochdale Hornets to North Wales! You can secure your tickets by clicking HERE.
